Drawer, Ode, Apostrophe ~ Acquaint/Friend

In answer to Writing 201 poetry prompt Drawer
Form: Ode
Device: Apostrophe

It’s actually the stream of consciousness prompt Acquaint/Friend by Linda G Hill that got me writing.

She’s laughing hysterically before laughter turns to tears.
Of course she’d forgotten this was here
And now her wounded heart comes to claims the arrears
Of the sorrow she’d ignored for a year.

Tell me, how can it be such a small thing
As a photo can hurt so much? After all
That drawer once hid a wedding ring
And now she’s been left behind to bawl.

Would you have thought that your best friend
Could stab you in the back that way?
Looking at the picture she doesn’t comprehend
How she didn’t see their play.

The three of them are smiling on the image
A picture of friendship and trust.
They’d known each other since college
To her, all of this seems so unjust.

Who ever said friendship was sacred?
Would someone care to tell me?
Weeks away from their nuptials, they both cheated
On her. And then left the country.

The photograph’s crumpled in her hand
Tears running down her lovely face
There’s nothing I can do but stand
Hoping she’ll see I’m here, seek my embrace.

I never saw the photograph until today
I’d have destroyed it otherwise.
Eventually she turns my way
And on my shoulder she cries.

Featured picture by sarahrhoad.com. I found it here. I hate removing watermarks because it takes away from the author and I believe in crediting the artist but unfortunately I had to cut it otherwise it wouldn’t have fitted as a featured image for this post.

My turn to say wow. Thank you so much. I’m humbled… where’s the blushing smiley when you need it?
