The Thorn Chronicles Part 1 ~ Kimberly Roth

Another free ebook I got… Kissed the first volume in the Thorn Chronicles

Trapped in a dark cult, sixteen-year-old Naomi Aren has lived a quiet, albeit unhappy, life nestled deep in the hills of the Ozarks. With uncut hair, denim skirts, and only roses for friends, Naomi seldom questions why her life is different from other kids at school. Until the day her abusive father announces her wedding. Naomi must marry Dwayne Yerdin, a bully who reeks of sweat and manure and is the only one person who scares her worse than her father.

Then she meets Kai, the mysterious boy who brings her exotic new roses and stolen midnight kisses. Kisses that bring her a strength she never knew she had. As the big day approaches, Naomi unearths more secrets of about her father’s cult. She learns she has power of her own and while Kai may have awakened that power, Naomi must find a way to use it to escape Dwayne and her father—without destroying herself.

Though not entirely accurate this description from Google gives you an idea about the beginning of the story. I really enjoyed the first part of the book, the sense of hopelessness and resignation that’s seeping through Naomi’s every day life. You know when you accept that your life will never be more than what it is. It’s a world in grey, no colour. In this case, Naomi’s life is only brightened by the roses she keeps in her greenhouse. I loved how the flowers became characters in the story.

The rest; some parts I liked, others not so much. Some of the changes happening to Naomi are going too fast. She’s becoming an extrovert teenagers way too fast for the reader. It doesn’t make much sense. Still it was a really nice read and another book, which sequel I need to read. I’m curious to see where this goes.
