What’s the most significant secret you’ve ever kept? Did the truth ever come out?
She held the envelope against her heart, wondering what to do. She knew what it asked her to do; but she didn’t think she could. How could Lisa ask her that? Why didn’t they do it before it was too late? Why should she carry that burden?
Who was she kidding? She’d carried that burden with her best friend since they were 14. Nobody else knew; well except Lisa’s parents, and they were gone too. But could she destroy a life? Change its axis? Did she have the right? From across the room, she smiled to Heather, partaking in the young woman’s sorrow. Jill may have lost her best friend but Heather had lost her sister. And Jill wasn’t going to tell her it wasn’t the case; she wouldn’t tell her she’d just buried her mother.
